We Became Rich. My God.
“Rank 3! Rank 3! Stop standing there blankly and register them first!”
The guild master shouted while still lying on the floor.
The guild clerk hurried back to the reception desk in panic.
After searching beneath the counter, he pulled out a sheet of paper. He took a deep breath, then forced a smile back onto his shocked face.
“Our guild is only a branch in a small town, so the highest rank we can register here is Rank 3. Anything above that must be done in a large city or the royal capital.”
The clerk began explaining that adventurers normally started at Rank 6 and slowly raised their rank over time.
“But with healing abilities this strong, Rank 2 is possible immediately. Mages with two attributes are extremely rare. And of course, a magical beast that obeys a child is rare too—no, a child who can command magical beasts is even rarer. Magical beasts normally don’t listen to anyone.”
It seemed the clerk thought the magical beast itself was unusually intelligent, rather than Dorothy truly taming it.
Honestly, Juhwan thought the same thing.
Smiling brightly, the clerk continued,
“If you register as Rank 3 here first, we’ll immediately send your documents to the main branch. Then later, when you visit a large city, you can become Rank 2 anytime.”
The clerk opened his mouth to explain more—
But suddenly, a huge face rose above the counter.
“Register first.”
It was the guild master.
He still looked like he was in pain.
Resting his chin on the desk, the master grabbed the clerk’s wrist.
“Talk later. Register first.”
Come to think of it, they still had not treated the bite wound from Oz.
The burning hair had been such a big problem that Juhwan forgot about it.
Blood was still flowing from the back of the master’s neck, staining his clothes red.
Oz had bitten him quite deeply.
As Juhwan quietly placed his hand near the master’s neck and sent healing magic into him, Dorothy carefully asked in a small voice,
“Dad… did Oz do something bad?”
“....”
That was hard to answer.
The master himself had no intention of hurting anyone, but other people probably would not react the same way.
The master smiled gently and answered instead of Juhwan.
“No, little one. The magical beast did well. That fellow protected his owner. You shouldn’t scold him. And he stopped the moment you told him to stop, didn’t he? That magical beast is excellent. And you are a growing sapling tree!”
Dorothy’s face immediately brightened.
“Yeah! Dorothy is a sapling tree.”
No, “sapling tree” was not really a thing.
Probably.
Well… this was another world, so maybe it existed here.
Still, a sprout was a sprout, and a tree was a tree.
But thanks to the master, Dorothy’s mood completely changed.
Just moments ago she had looked anxious, but now her face brightened again.
Even if Juhwan was strong and nobody dared attack them, the atmosphere around her must have frightened the child.
Dorothy had done nothing wrong.
But children still noticed people’s reactions.
She probably felt guilty because of everyone staring at her.
The guild master erased all of that instantly.
When the person who got hurt simply laughed it off, everyone else naturally felt like forgiving her too.
Juhwan looked at the master and slightly bowed his head.
Silently saying:
“Thank you.”
The master grinned.
Meanwhile, the guild clerk had finished writing on the paper.
He pushed the document toward Juhwan.
“Please write the party members’ names here, and each person must place one drop of blood on the paper. Rank 6 uses ordinary paper, but Rank 3 uses magical paper. Ah, use this to prick your finger. Some people cut themselves with knives and end up covered in blood, so we prepared these. Adventurers tend to be rough people.”
The clerk handed him a short needle attached to a wooden handle.
‘They definitely don’t disinfect these.’
Juhwan created a tiny flame at his fingertip and lightly burned the needle.
He suddenly wondered if everyone here simply lived risking tetanus every day.
At the top of the paper was written:
Rank 3.
Below that were spaces for the party name and members.
Underneath were the rules guild members had to follow.
There weren’t many.
Pretty simple.
Apparently, the clerk had written everything by hand.
Wouldn’t it be easier to prepare these in advance?
Well… maybe Rank 6 forms were prepared already, but Rank 3 registrations were rare.
That was probably it.
All Juhwan needed to do was write the party name and the members.
For some reason, a small number “3” was also written in the corner.
“If you cannot read or write, please tell me. There’s no need to feel embarrassed. Most adventurers who come here can’t read. We usually fill things out for them, and there are even people who make money reading and writing for others.”
“I can read and write. Though I’m still clumsy.”
“Eh?!”
The clerk jumped in shock.
“You truly are different from what I expected.”
“....”
“Even our master still struggles with reading and writing. Of course, he’s studying. Haah… that’s why I handle all his paperwork. Honestly, it drives me crazy.”
The master laughed loudly.
“That’s why you get paid more. Along with that endlessly talking mouth.”
“Well, that’s true. I got fired from my previous job because I talked too much.”
Ignoring the two bickering, Juhwan looked toward Lizzy and Dorothy.
“We need a party name. What sounds good?”
Lizzy tilted her head slightly, then smiled brightly.
“How about Dorothy and Oz?”
Ah.
That was nice.
Dorothy’s face lit up immediately.
Holding Oz tightly, she pressed her face against him.
“It’s Dorothy and Oz! Understand? We’re called that because we’re sapling trees!”
Sometimes nobody could understand how Dorothy’s thoughts reached their conclusions.
Juhwan truly had no idea how she connected those ideas together.
He wrote the party name and the three names onto the paper, then placed a drop of blood on it.
Since it was magical paper, he expected it to glow—
But nothing happened yet.
Lizzy stepped beside him.
Her face tightened slightly as she held out her finger.
It seemed she was afraid of being pricked.
She hesitated several times before finally squeezing her eyes shut and pressing her finger against the needle.
She could calmly cut apart bloody rabbit carcasses and skins—
Yet she was afraid of this tiny needle.
For some reason, it was both funny and cute.
Then it became Dorothy’s turn.
“...U… ah… no… Dorothy has no blood… Dorothy’s finger has no blood… really… Dorothy has no blood…”
Apparently, she was absolutely terrified of the needle.
Her face had turned pale blue.
“Dorothy, it’ll only hurt for a moment. It doesn’t hurt at all.”
Lizzy, who had hesitated so much herself earlier, was now trying hard to persuade Dorothy.
The guild clerk signaled toward Juhwan with his eyes.
He lifted the needle slightly and gestured for him to bring Dorothy’s hand over.
Haah.
There was no helping it.
Juhwan sighed softly and held Dorothy’s hand.
“Uwaaaah… Dorothy has no blood… not even one blood… uwaaaaah…”
The child finally burst into full crying.
She shook her head violently, desperately trying to pull her hand away.
Juhwan held her hand out toward the clerk while he and Lizzy both tried comforting her.
“It’s okay.”
“It won’t hurt.”
“Just for a moment.”
But Dorothy kept crying loudly.
She truly seemed terrified.
“It’s done. All finished.”
While Dorothy was still crying, the clerk quickly pricked her finger and drew one drop of blood.
Dorothy did not even realize she had been poked.
Still crying, she stared strangely at her finger.
The moment her blood touched the paper—
The paper suddenly began glowing softly.
“Uwe… eh… oh…”
Her crying slowly became quieter.
Then finally stopped.
“The paper is glowing!”
“I’ve seen it before, but it’s still amazing every time.”
Dorothy and Lizzy stared fixedly at the magical paper.
The light slowly faded away.
“Hehehe. This paper is slightly more expensive than ordinary magical paper. Usually, one contract only allows a single person. This one allows three people. Once the magic activates, it can never be changed, which means it cannot be forged.”
The number “3” in the corner apparently meant the number of people allowed in the contract.
There were probably versions for two people, three people, and so on.
“Well then, the contract is now completely finished. From this moment onward, all of you are officially adventurers.”
Dorothy, whose cheeks still carried tear marks, dug through her front pocket and pulled out the rabbit doll Toto.
Sniffling, she held it out toward the clerk.
“Please make Toto part of the party too.”
“...The doll?”
“It’s Toto. Dorothy and Oz and Toto are one body. We’re always together. Otherwise we become acorns.”
“....”
The clerk chuckled softly.
Pretending to write on the paper, he spoke seriously.
“Alright. Registered. Toto is part of the party too now.”
Dorothy lowered her head sadly.
Hugging Toto tightly, she whispered,
“Lies. That Mister lied. He didn’t write it. Lying is really bad, Toto.”
Dorothy looked like the saddest child in the entire world.
The clerk looked awkwardly toward Juhwan and Lizzy.
“I’m sorry.”
“We’re sorry.”
Juhwan and Lizzy bowed almost at the same time.
There had already been enough chaos today.
Now the child was saying ridiculous things too.
Juhwan suddenly felt very sorry for the poor clerk.
Working really was stressful.
Making money was truly difficult.
Patting Dorothy’s back gently, Juhwan bowed once more.
“Thank you for registering our party.”
“It was nothing.”
The clerk placed three necklaces onto the counter.
A wooden plate hung from each one.
Santa’s face was carved on the front.
The number 3 was carved on the back.
This was probably proof that they were adventurers.
“You should wear these at all times. They act as identification.”
“Um… who exactly is this old man?”
“Ah, Santa? Wait… you don’t know Santa?”
“....”
The clerk suddenly looked troubled.
“Santa is the guardian god of our Adventurers’ Guild. You could say he’s the guardian god of all adventurers. Though technically he’s somewhere between a god and a magical beast, so some people dislike him. You’re not from a region that hates Santa, right? Ah… if that were true, you probably wouldn’t have entered after seeing the sign.”
Judging from the context, Santa was some kind of guardian deity.
But—
Wasn’t Santa human?
Then again, a human could never send someone from one world to another.
Still, he was also treated partly like a magical beast.
Juhwan had absolutely no idea what was going on.
While he was still confused, the guild worker from the purchasing counter approached.
Apparently, the rabbit fur appraisal was finished.
Smiling brightly, the clerk held out a flat tray filled with money.
“There were seven rabbit pelts total. The current high-grade market price is six silver coins each, but because the quality is excellent, we calculated seven silver coins each. So the total is forty-nine silver coins. How would you like payment? We can give two gold coins and nine silver coins, or all silver, or mixed with lina coins.”
The reception clerk joined the conversation.
“You could also open a guild account. If you carry a certificate showing your balance, you can withdraw money at other branches too. Many people carry cash directly, but that’s dangerous. Ah, and forging certificates is a serious crime, so absolutely do not do it.”
So the guild acted like a bank too.
The unfamiliar word probably meant “account.”
Juhwan nodded.
“Are account records shared between branches? And if so, how long does it take? Also, how do you confirm someone’s identity?”
The clerk’s eyes widened.
“You’re the first person to ask those questions. Most people stop listening after hearing they can exchange certificates for money. Truly, you continue to surprise me.”
But wasn’t it natural to ask before opening an account?
After hearing the explanation, it really was similar to a bank.
Records were regularly exchanged between branches, so adventurer information and account balances were shared over time.
Identity was confirmed through magically connected necklaces created when the account was opened.
If you lost the necklace, you usually had to return to the original branch and make a new one.
The clerk explained that the branch carefully recorded details about every adventurer:
Appearance, weapons, facial features—
Everything was written down in case problems happened later.
“Our Adventurers’ Guild has a long history. We know how to handle all kinds of situations. You don’t need to worry.”
Which also meant many problems had happened before.
Juhwan thought that silently but said nothing.
He opened an account under the party name and deposited thirty silver coins into the guild.
That gave him another necklace for the account.
Thankfully, only the leader needed to place blood on it.
“Thank goodness.”
If Dorothy had started crying about blood again, he might truly lose his mind.
Seeing Juhwan’s exhausted face, the clerk chuckled.
“Ah, and please come back tomorrow—no, the day after tomorrow. Normally, when someone first registers, a Rank 5 adventurer accompanies them for about a month. During that time, they learn the basics adventurers should know. Not weapons—daily life things. You became Rank 3 immediately, but there are still many basic things you should learn.”
“Understood.”
Juhwan answered, then looked at Lizzy.
She had been acting strange for a while now.
Her face looked pale, and her movements were stiff like a robot.
Was she tired?
He became worried.
They needed to find an inn quickly so she could rest.
At this rate, she might collapse.
As Juhwan turned to leave, the guild clerk handed him a small animal-sized necklace.
“This is a free gift. Magical beasts being tamed must wear collars. Otherwise, nobody can complain if they get hunted. Please make sure it wears it.”
They immediately placed the collar around Oz’s neck.
Dorothy, who had still been sad about Toto not joining the party, instantly became lively again.
“Oz looks cool! I want a collar too! Not this one—that cool one!”
Apparently, Dorothy liked the magical beast leather collar more than the Santa necklace.
After promising to return in two days, Juhwan wrapped an arm around Lizzy’s shoulder and turned to leave.
The adventurers inside the guild all quickly turned their heads away at the same time.
Someone whispered quietly:
“Hey, don’t make eye contact. Fire might fly at you.”
I don’t do that.
What do they think I am, some crazy person?
Juhwan sighed softly and left the guild with his family.
Lizzy still remained silent while they walked back toward the wagon.
Juhwan became seriously worried.
Was something bothering her?
He finally stopped walking and looked carefully into her face.
Lizzy blinked slowly.
Then suddenly she murmured,
“My God, Juhwan… we became rich.”
“....”
That was it?
She was only shocked because they suddenly had money?
Juhwan suddenly laughed.
“Lizzy, from now on, we’re going to earn even more money.”
“...My God.”
Lizzy blinked again and slowly looked up at him.
Very slowly, expression returned to her face.
Then finally—
Her cheeks turned red.
And once again, she whispered:
“We became rich. My God.”
