Chapter 39

I Protect My Family (feat. Dorothy)

The goblin that had reached its claws toward Dorothy suddenly got up.

Maybe it sensed danger—it didn’t attack Juhwan. Instead, it turned its back and tried to run.

Juhwan tightened his waist and raised his axe high.

Then he swung it down with full force.

Thud!

The goblin’s head split open.

The thick blade dug deep.

Dirty red blood splashed onto Juhwan’s body.

“One.”

He muttered quietly and kicked the goblin away.

The axe came out easily from its flesh.

Without even looking back, he ran forward.

He swung his axe at the goblin closest to the fence.

He aimed for the neck—

But the axe struck between the shoulder and neck.

Goblins had short necks.

A choking scream burst out.

He pulled the axe out and struck again.

“Two.”

The goblin’s head shattered.

Juhwan turned his body.

Something felt strange.

Some goblins had red, bloodshot eyes.

Not all of them—but many.

“…”

Their behavior was strange too.

Even while watching their companions die—

They didn’t care.

They kept running toward the fence.

Toward the house.

Juhwan noticed something.

Some goblins had swollen fronts under their ragged clothes.

“They’re targeting Lizzy…”

He remembered stories.

Goblins kidnapping women.

In that moment—

His vision went dark.

Like something snapped inside his head.

He grabbed a goblin running nearby and sent mana into it.

Flames burst from his hand—

Stronger than before.

The goblin screamed and rolled on the ground.

But the fire didn’t go out.

Juhwan grabbed another.

And another.

In an instant, three or four goblins were burning.

He didn’t even look back.

He spun his body and swung his axe wide.

Two goblins were hit and fell.

But—

There were too many.

One goblin jumped onto his back.

It wrapped its arm around his neck—

And bit his ear.

A sharp pain shot through him.

But he didn’t hesitate.

He reached back, grabbed its hair—

And pulled hard.

Flames burst from the goblin.

A scream echoed near his ear.

He threw the burning body away.

Another goblin rushed toward him.

Juhwan swung his axe again and moved forward.

Now, he didn’t aim for specific parts.

He just struck their bodies and kept moving.

Thud! Thud!

Small bodies collapsed.

“Damn it!”

The curse slipped out.

Some goblins were getting close to the fence—

Where he couldn’t reach in time.

Juhwan ran toward them, setting fire to any he could touch.

But—

He had to stay calm.

“Don’t use too much strength at once…”

There might be more enemies.

He had to save his strength—

Until the very end.

“It’s okay. I can protect them.”

“I won’t let them touch my family.”

“Not even a finger… not even a single hair.”

The fence had bamboo placed across it for support.

Some goblins were stepping on it and climbing up.

The top was sharpened like spears.

Even while being pierced—

They kept climbing.

Juhwan ran there and grabbed a goblin’s ankle—

* * *

Screams filled the air.

Lizzy pulled Dorothy back.

“I have to stay calm…”

Her husband was fighting outside with his life.

She couldn’t just stand there.

Even if she couldn’t help much—

At least she shouldn’t be a burden.

And she wasn’t alone.

Dorothy was with her.

Bang!

The fence shook.

“Ah!”

Her body jumped in fear.

The bamboo fence wasn’t as strong as wood.

If it kept shaking like this—

It might break.

A goblin’s hand and head suddenly appeared over the fence.

Its eyes locked onto them.

Her body trembled.

But suddenly—

It screamed and was dragged back.

Juhwan had grabbed it.

Right—

Her husband was there.

She turned.

“Dorothy, go inside. Hurry.”

She pushed her crying daughter.

She wanted to go with her—

But she couldn’t.

There were too many goblins.

Juhwan was alone.

If even one got inside—

She had to stop it.

Lizzy forced a smile.

“It’s okay. Dad will protect us.
But you have to go inside. Lock the door and hide under the bed.”

“Mom?”

“Mom will help Dad here.”

At that moment—

Dorothy’s eyes widened.

Lizzy turned.

A goblin was climbing over the fence.

She quickly pushed Dorothy toward the house—

And ran to the bamboo.

She grabbed a short, sharpened bamboo spear.

“Dorothy, go inside! Hurry!”

The goblin climbed higher.

Blood dripped from its hand.

But it didn’t stop.

Juhwan was still fighting outside.

Lizzy bit her lip.

“I have to be brave…”

She dragged the bamboo.

It was heavy.

Too long.

The goblin was about to come over.

She raised the spear—

But it shook in her hands.

Too heavy.

She pressed it against the fence and pushed upward.

The sharp tip pierced the goblin’s hand.

It screamed.

“One more time…”

She pushed again—

But the goblin grabbed the spear.

It wouldn’t move.

Fear filled her.

She pulled with all her strength—

But it didn’t budge.

* * *

Dorothy stood frozen.

She couldn’t move.

Even though her mom told her to run—

She couldn’t.

Monsters were everywhere.

But something was even scarier—

“What if Mom and Dad disappear…?”

Before, when her father didn’t return—

She wasn’t afraid.

But now—

“Mom… Dad…”

Tears fell.

Then—

She saw it.

The goblin grabbed the spear.

“Ah!”

She hiccupped in fear.

Her body shook.

“I have to help Mom…”

Her legs trembled.

“Oz… I’m scared…”

Then—

Something moved.

The pocket.

“Oz!”

The rabbit jumped out.

It was fast.

Very fast.

Like a small mouse.

It ran toward Lizzy—

Then—

Jumped into the air.

“It’s flying?!”

Oz stuck to the goblin’s face—

And started kicking.

So fast—

She couldn’t even see it clearly.

“So fast!”

Dorothy shouted.

At that moment—

Juhwan arrived.

His axe flew—

And struck the goblin.

Oz cried out—

“Pii!”

And jumped back down.

The goblin disappeared.

“It’s over! Oz, it’s over!”

Dorothy ran toward Oz.

The rabbit wiggled its ears proudly.

Lizzy turned back toward the fence—

Still trembling—

But standing firm.

“Dorothy will help too!”

Holding Oz tightly, she looked around.

“If monsters come, I’ll stop them!”

Lizzy stood ready with the spear.

Dorothy smiled.

“We’re brave!”

Then—

Another goblin hand appeared.

Dorothy pointed.

“Oz! There! A monster!”

Oz tilted its head.

Maybe it didn’t understand.

“Go, Oz!”

Oz’s ears perked up.

It jumped down—

And ran.

“Fly, Oz!”

Dorothy shouted.

Oz jumped into the air—

But before it could attack—

The goblin was dragged away.

Juhwan had already taken it down.

“It’s okay, Oz! The next one is yours!”

Dorothy wasn’t scared anymore.

Her dad was there.

Oz was there.

“Now Dorothy will protect Mom!”

“Monsters don’t stand a chance!”

“Oz, do your best!”

The small rabbit’s ears fluttered.
